Erik, this is awesome. I thought I was the only person who had noticed that nothing is ever my fault in Spanish. Wonderful article! :)

Hello.
First of all i'm sorry if my english is not the best.

When you say in spanish 'Se han perdido las llaves', yes,the sense it's just like you say that the keys lost themselves and it is not your fault. But when you say 'Se _me_ han perdido las llaves' or 'La planta se _me_ ha muerto' , in these cases, the sentence's sense it's that you are responsible .
Maybe a trick would be to add 'a mi' (only in your mind) :
Se _me_ han perdido las llaves (a mi)
or
(a mi) Se _me_ han perdido las llaves
A think that the right translation for the above is...
The keys was lost by me

but without 'me' the sentence have not sense if you add 'a mi'.

Well, I hope that this helps you.

¡ Un saludo y ánimo con el español !

Great post! Knowing that the dishes break themselves in Spanish would have been useful when I was growing up. =)
