Los Pollitos Dicen: Combining two cultures

CarrieMaria

Today’s podcast is with Carrie Ferguson Weir, a Cuban-American entrepreneur from Miami, currently living in Tennessee. In this interview, Carrie talks about belonging to two cultures (Anglo/Latino) and gives us her impressions about Cuba. She also fills us in about her successful clothing business, “Los Pollitos Dicen,” a T-shirt line for kids.

Carrie is a former journalist who started the company in 2005 with her friend and business partner Oscar Alonso after noticing a gap in the baby goods market for togs that were a little more culturally-inspired. “Los pollitos dicen” is the title of a popular lullaby that has been sung for generations in Latin America. Carrie and Oscar have already had a lot of success, such as selling their clothes in Target, a major U.S. retailer.

In addition to running a successful business, Carrie also writes about her life as a bilingual mom raising little Maria in her blog Bilingual in the Boonies. In the interview, you’re going to hear us talk about a blog post Carrie wrote earlier this year, entitled “Freedom for the familia.” It’s about the U.S. family reunification program that will allow some of Carrie’s relatives from Cuba to come to the U.S. next year.

This is the longest podcast I’ve published to date and Carrie and I spoke a little bit in Spanglish, so a complete transcript with explanatory notes inside the text is available here.

A huge “GRACIAS” to Carrie for spending some time with me because she’s a super busy lady. Thanks, Carrie!! :)
