I bet if I were to do a survey of people studying Spanish the question ¿Cómo se dice….? would be among the first phrases most would remember learning. After all, it’s short, easy to pronounce and a nice crutch to lean on whenever one’s Spanish vocab runs out of gas.  Speaking from my own personal experience, I know that one could be pretty proficient in Spanish and still need to ask ¿Cómo se dice? on numerous occasions.  That’s why it’s time to bench this oft-repeated question and come up with some alternatives.

To ask about the meaning of a word or phrase you could say…

¿Qué quiere decir…? (What does — mean?)

¿Puedo usar … para decir … ? (Can I use — to say — ?)

¿De qué otra manera se puede decir….? (What’s another way to say —?)

¿Qué tal si en lugar de decir …. digo …? (What if, instead of saying — I said —?)

¿Cuál es el verbo que se refiere a la acción de ….? (What’s the verb that refers to the action of —?)

To ask how to express something, you could say….

¿Qué se dice cuando….? (What does one say when—?)

¿Qué tengo que decir cuando ….? (What should I say when—?)

¿Es muy informal decir…? (Is it very informal to say—?)

¿Cuál es la forma más correcta de decir….? (What’s the most polite way of saying—?)

Si alguien me dice …. ¿cómo tengo que contestarle? (If somebody says — to me, how should I respond?)

¿Hay en español una frase hecha que equivalga a ….? (Is there a Spanish expression equivalent to—?)

Try these out with your language intercambios or the next time you feel like stretching your Spanish a bit in a conversation with a native Spanish speaker. What’s so great about several of these questions is that they will spark answers that require elaboration and add another dimension to the conversation you’re having.  So take some of these phrases for a spin and give the tired ¿Cómo se dice? a much-earned break.
