David calls a scavenger hunt a ginkana. He also uses the expression dejar a la altura del betún when comparing Whole Foods, a U.S. grocery store, to El Corte Inglés, a Spanish department store. Betún can mean shoe polish or asphalt, so this idiomatic expression is the Spanish equivalent of to leave somebody in the dust, figurative speaking, or to make mud out of someone’s reputation. In this case, David thinks that Whole Foods’ service and presentation is so outstanding that it is light years ahead of what one finds in Spain’s El Corte Inglés.
