Phone Talk 3: Sorry, wrong number
In this last installment about how to talk on the phone in Spanish, I’m going to focus on some helpful phrases to get you out of a jam. There are a few you can use when somebody dials a wrong number and others are for those times when you can’t hear what the other person is saying. The formal usted form is used. As always, you can substitute and use the tú form as you see fit.

Sorry, I dialed the wrong number
Disculpe. Marqué el número equivocado.
Me equivoqué de número.
Me he equivocado al marcar.
He debido de equivocarme al marcar. (I must’ve dialed the wrong number.)
Sorry, you dialed the wrong number
Lo siento, se ha equivocado de número.
Tiene el número equivocado.
Technical difficulties
Disculpe, se le/la oye muy mal (Sorry, can’t hear you very well)
Disculpe, apenas le/la oigo (Sorry, I can hardly hear you)
Hay muchas interferencias (There’s a lot of static noise)
Hay mucho ruido en el fondo (There’s a lot of noise in the background)
Se había cortado (The call got dropped)
To ask the other person to call back
¿Podría volver a marcar la llamada? (Can you try making the call again?)
¿Podría decirme qué número ha marcardo? (Can you tell me what number you dialed?
To ask the other person to slow down or to repeat
¿Le importaría repetirme de nuevo….? (Would you mind repeating again…?)
¿Sería tan amable de deletrearme….? (Would you be so kind as to spell for me…?)
¿Podría hablar un poco más alto? (Could you speak up?)
¿Podría hablar más despacio, por favor? (Could you speak slower, please?)
Obviously, you can use the first part of these phrases “le importaría…, sería tan amable…, podría…,” interchangeably. They are all polite ways of conveying the same idea.
To say you don’t understand or to clear up doubts
No estoy seguro/a de haber comprendido… (I’m not sure I understood…)
Tengo dudas sobre lo que ha dicho sobre… (I’m not sure I followed what you’ve said about…)
Se lo repito; corríjame si es necesario (I’m going to repeat it to you. Correct me, if necessary.)
Si lo he comprendido bien, …. (If I’ve understood correctly….)
To say that you’ve understood perfectly
Sí, he entendido perfectamente
De acuerdo
Efectivamente.…(Basically….)
This came in handy today! Somebody kept calling me on my movil asking for someone else. I kept saying you have the wrong number. After the 4th time of her asking “Is this Marco Paolo?” I said “I think I know who I am and what my name is!” jejeje
¿En serio? ¡Qué gracia!
