Phone Talk, Part 2
In this second installment about how to talk on the phone in Spanish, we’re going to take a look at ways to steer and funnel calls. For example, ways to say that someone is busy and can’t come to the phone, how to say you want to leave a message, etc. In all examples, the usted form and slightly more formal phrases are used. You can change it to the tú form as you see fit. And of course you can always just keep things simple and say short phrases like “No lo sé ” or “No está ahora.” The point of this post is to give you alternatives to the conventional phrases. Also, where you see “le, lo, la“, that is obviously referring to the direct object pronouns him or her, depending on the situation and the regional usage since le (him) is used in Spain but lo is used in Latin America.
To ask if someone is available:
¿Está libre en estos momentos?
¿Sería posible hablar ahora con él/con ella?
¿Podría atenderme ahora?
To say you don’t know where the other person is:
No está localizado/a en estos momentos.
En este instante no le/lo/la localizo.
To say the person isn’t there:
No está aquí en estos momentos.
Ha salido a una reunión / entrevista, a comer, etc.
Está de viaje y no volverá hasta (la semana que viene, el 5 de marzo, etc.)
To say the other person is busy:
No puede atenderle/atenderla en estos momentos.
Está muy ocupado/a y siente no poder atenderle/la
Está reunido/a.
En estos momentos tiene la línea ocupada.
Está atendiendo a un(una) cliente(clienta) y no podemos interrumpirle/la.
To ask if the caller wants to leave a message or talk to somebody else:
¿Quiere dejar algún recado/mensaje?
¿Desea que le/la pase con alguna otra persona?
¿Quiere que le diga que ha llamado?
¿Quiere que le/la llame?
To say that you want to leave a message or speak to someone else:
¿Puedo dejarle un mensaje?
¿Puede decirle que le/lo/la he llamado?
¿Podría pasarme con su secretaria o alguien de su departamento?
To say you will call back or to ask about the return of the other person:
Vuelvo a llamar luego.
¿Sobre qué fecha regresará?
¿A qué hora regresará?
