“Chico Danone busca yogurina divertida”

That’s the headline on a Barcelona personal ad currently running on Loquo.com, Spain’s version of Craigslist. This headline cracks me up because it’s such a wonderful pun.

DanoneDanone is a brand of yogurt while yogurina is slang for “hot young female.” Yogurina is cheesecake.

In Spain, yogurt is advertised and marketed as a healthy, good for you product. The people who appear in yogurt commercials in Spain are young and hot. It’s funny because in the U.S., yogurt is a rather ho-hum product that is advertised directly to mothers as a convenient food they can pack as part of their kid’s lunches or the mothers themselves can eat while on a diet. Usually the ads in the U.S. don’t generally feature bikini model types or lifeguard-calibre studs.

The male equivalent of yogurina is yogurín. Exhibit A is this guy. He goes by only his first name, Darek. This beefcake’s only claim to fame is being the significantly younger boyfriend of Ana Obregón, a Spanish actress in her sixth decade, who was once called the geriatric Barbie by Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. Isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black? Oh, never mind.

Anyway, to all you singletons out there, start the New Year right and add a little yogurín or yogurina to your diet. ;)

Have you heard the song “Get Danone”? In reality it’s “Get Down On It” - but a generation of Spaniards thought it was a tribute to the sexy substance.
Right up there with the TV commercial for “Chopped” ham (to the tune of YMCA - think “Young man” and substitute “Chopped”)

    Chris,
You’re killing me (with laughter) with your comments this week! We should start a Wikipedia about Spanish pop culture references to document it for posterity. :)
