Here’s a shortcut to ask questions that begin “How long…” in Spanish.

You can use any of the following. They all mean the same thing: “How long…”

¿Desde cuando….? (¿Desde cuando nadamos? How long have we been swimming?)

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que practicas yoga?

¿Cuánto tiempo…?

¿Desde hace cuánto tiempo…?

¿Hace cuánto que…?

And the response? Use any of the following:

Llevar + time period + gerund (Llevamos medio día nadando. We’ve been swimming for half the day.) ¡Ojo! Note that with this construction, you don’t have to use “haber” in the sentence.

Hace + time period (Hace un año que practico el yoga. I’ve been doing yoga for a year.)

Desde hace + time period (Practico el yoga desde hace un año.)

Desde + the year or a concrete moment (Estoy practicando el yoga desde que tenía 15 años. Desde 2002, estoy practicando el yoga.)
